Le codage en français langue seconde !!  (Session 1A - Full morning)

Êtes-vous à la recherche d’idées pour comment aborder le codage en français langue seconde? Voulez-vous expérimenter avec les robots programmables? Découvrez les éléments clés de codage de manière interactive. De plus, découvrez comment l’apprentissage par exploration et/ l’apprentissage par projet peut être tissé avec le codage et l’approche neurolinguistique dans les programmes de français langue seconde.

Les participant(e)s observeront la modélisation d’activités de codage en utilisant les robots programmables. Par la suite, les participants auront l’occasion d’explorer l’application du codage pour leur salle de classe en jouant avec les robots programmables (beebot, sphero, codey rocky, dash).

Cette session est visée pour les enseignants de français de base, français intégré, français intensif et français immersion de la maternelle à la 8e année. La session sera offerte en français. 

​

*Note: This session is a double-session and takes up the full morning.  This session is for grades primary to 8 French second language teachers (i.e. Core French gr. 4-8, Intensive french gr. 6, Early French immersion gr. p-2, late French immersion 7 and gr. 7 and 8 Integrated French).

Promouvoir la littératie avec les iTrailers et les fonds verts

Cet atelier montrera des trucs qui motiveront  les enfants à parler en français dans la salle de classe. Les participants auront l'occasion de travailler avec le programme de iTrailer et le lien qu'on peut y faire avec la lecture. Pendant la session, Gilles partagera aussi des petits systèmes qui encouragent les jeunes à parler en français pendant la journée scolaire. Cette session sera aussi une session de partage, donc si vous avez des bonnes idées qui travaillent dans votre salle de classe, soyez prêt à les partager!! :)

The Gaels of Nova Scotia

After reviewing the Nova Scotia EECD outcomes with some teacher friends, we developed a fun, interactive, and engaging presentation giving an overview of Nova Scotian Gaelic culture and the influence Gaels have had on both our past and our present. During the workshop, teachers will have the opportunity to:​

  • learn some Gaelic phrases

  • view a Powerpoint presentation explaining various aspects of the culture and history

  • sing a milling song and 'mill' a cloth

  • dance a few steps

  • try on a great kilt

  • listen to live fiddle tunes

  • 'read' some Gaelic books

 

We will also discuss how we adapt our work for different grades from Primary to grade 6 as well as adults. If time allows, we can also look at some traditional Gaelic games, seasonal celebrations or how to approach a square set figure in your Phys. Ed. class or fiddle tunes for your Music class!

The Mi’kmaw View of the World Through Its Language

Curtis will teach Mi’kmaw language and culture through authentic activities, stories and games.  Essential in language learning, Curtis will demonstrate TPR (Total Physical Response), a technique which is influenced by sign culture to teach vocabulary.  Curtis will talk about how words are formed using Mi’kmaw grammar rules. Did you know that in Mi’kmaw things are identified as animate or inanimate not by gender?

Coding in Core French using Scratch

In this workshop you will learn how to foster authentic communication in French through the use of technology. The neurolinguistic approach will be coupled with coding to get students communicating in French. Scratch is the website that will be used in this workshop. Please BYOD to this session! YMCA Immigrant Youth Services

The majority of our time will be sharing information about our School Settlement Program.  We also have a special project which is a video of a forum theatre workshop which looks into the experiences of immigrant youth and their ideas about gender based violence prevention gbvp.  Basically, our approach is that gbv is a social problem that we are all responsible for solving and this video shows immigrant youth as leaders in exploring this topic. The video is about 15 minutes long and we have been facilitating workshops using the video as an educational tool for teachers, youth and other service providers.  The broad themes are around anti-bullying messages and the focus is the specific experiences of newcomer girls.

Makerspaces - making shadow puppets in Core French

This workshop will focus on the integration of makerspaces and the neurolinguistic approach to foster authentic communication in French class. En utilisant des activités pratiques basées sur l’approche neurolinguistique, cet atelier va démontrer comment enseigner les résultats d’apprentissage de l’oral, de la lecture et de l’écriture dans les classes de français de base 4e à la 9e année. Using practical activities based on the Neurolinguistic Approach, this workshop will demonstrate how to teach the “oral, reading and writing” outcomes in Core French grade 4 to 9.

Vous êtes examinateurs DELF ? Vous enseignez et préparez vos élèves aux épreuves du DELF ? Cet atelier vous donnera des idées d’activités pour bien préparer et se préparer aux épreuves de production orale du DELF scolaire/junior, du niveau A1 au niveau B2. Bien comprendre les épreuves et les tâches à accomplir selon les niveaux, ce qui est évalué. Quelles ressources authentiques exploiter ? Comment encourager l’auto-évaluation des productions ? Vous serez donc aussi amenés à expérimenter et analyser des activités motivantes pour favoriser l’expression orale dans la salle de classe.

Introduction to Mi’kmaw Culture and Language

In this workshop, you will get the opportunity to experience learning about Mi'kmaq Culture, both historically and today. You will also get the opportunity to experience learning basic conversation in the Mi'kmaq Language.

Making Movies and Videos in French

Intro to Salsa Dance

Join us for a fun one hour intro to Cuban Salsa. Learn the basic steps, partner work and your first turn of this partnered dance from Cuba that is danced all over the world. Cuban salsa started in the 1950s from influences from traditional Cuban dances Like Rumba Guaguaco and Cuban Son. Cuban Salsa is a relaxed style of salsa truly invented for social dancing. It’s fast paced, with lots of complex footwork, hip and body movements, and turn patterns that allow for lots of musicality and creativity. It is danced in a circular motion creating a flow and connection between the partners.

Cette présentation donnera un aperçu de Canadian Parents for French.  Il fournira des informations sur nos activités qui permettent de faire participer les élèves à la classe de FLS.

This presentation will give an overview of Canadian Parents for French.  It will provide information on our activities that help engage students in the FSL classroom.

Total Participation Techniques: Making Every Student an Active Learner

Providing easy-to-use alternatives to the “stand and deliver” approach to teaching that causes so many students to tune out--or even drop out--Total Participation Techniques presents dozens of ways to engage K–12 students in active learning and allow them to demonstrate the depth of their knowledge and understanding. This workshop will provide examples used in HRCE classrooms and will give you an opportunity to rethink how you could add TPP to one of your own lessons.

E-Portfolios for French

The neurolinguistic approach will be coupled with technology to foster communication in French class. You will create an online e-portfolio in the form of a website. Listening, speaking, reading and writing authentically in French will be the main structures of the e-portfolio. Chromebooks will be used in this activity.  Please BYOD! (Bring your own device).

 

Fionn MacCool: Gaelic Language & Storytelling in Celtic Cultures

Terri will be using her book "Fionn MacCool and the Salmon of Knowledge" and tools & activities to celebrate Gaelic language and culture for Gaelic Nova Scotia Month (May) or any time of year. You will learn about the correct terminology to use when speaking about Celtic cultures, some basic Gaelic, and will discuss the importance of teaching this topic in your classrooms. 

​

The majority of this session will be in English, with some introductory Gaelic introduced.   Activities for all grade levels will be suggested.
